Alphington Primary School – Brick Inlay and Material Reuse
Alphington Primary School was delivered as a time-sensitive education project requiring a practical and flexible façade solution. The builder, Plan Group, required a red brick finish, however a fixed brick specification had not been made during the early stages of the project.
This created an opportunity for Form Brick to suggest a blend of waste product that was currently in stock from previous projects.

Brick Inlay and Reclaimed Materials
Form Brick proposed a brick inlay solution using reclaimed brick materials available at the time. These materials included off cuts and surplus bricks from previous projects, as well as unused back faces of bricks that had been cut for earlier applications.
Rather than disposing of this material, Form Brick recommended blending the various brick byproducts to form a controlled red-toned mix. Sample panels were prepared and reviewed by the builder and client, with a final blend agreed prior to production.
During preparation for the brick inlay process, the bricks were waxed to enable cleaning of concrete slurry form the finished panels. At this stage, the agreed proportions of each reclaimed material were blended to achieve consistency across the façade.
Construction Outcome
The brick inlay system allowed the blended materials to be integrated into prefabricated elements with accurate placement and consistent joint alignment.
This approach supported quality control while reducing on-site waste, minimising the need for newly manufactured materials, and helping to minimise the project’s carbon footprint.
Outcome
Alphington Primary School demonstrates how brick inlay can support more sustainable construction practices through material reuse. By salvaging brick byproducts and incorporating them into a controlled inlay system, the project reduced waste while delivering a durable façade with a distinct and varied finish, appropriate for an education facility.
