Rex Gorell BMW – Brick Inlay Using Reclaimed Brick Materials
Introduction
The Rex Gorell BMW project involved the development of an internal wall façade using reclaimed brick materials sourced from a demolished building. The requirement was to achieve a consistent brick finish while working with non-standard materials.
Project Information
Project Status: Completed
Project address: Geelong, VIC, Australia.
Brick Inlay and Reclaimed Materials
Bricks were collected from a demolition site.
Two brick facings were cut from each brick and used in Form Brick’s brick inlay system on the Jewell station apartment building in Brunswick.
The remaining centre section of the brick was then rotated and cut again, making additional usable pieces, and this second, smaller project to be completed form the same raw material.
Surface preparation was kept to a minimum. Residual mortar was partially removed, while the original surface condition, including existing mortar staining from previous use, was retained. No additional finishing was applied.
Form Brick maintains stock of reclaimed brick byproducts, allowing materials from previous projects to be reused where suitable.
Construction Outcome
Processing each brick into multiple usable components reduced reliance on new materials and improved material efficiency. The approach also reduced waste generated from demolition and limited additional handling on site.
Material Efficiency Highlight
- Increased yield per brick.
- No need for new brick supply.
- Minimal processing required.
- Less waste to landfill.
- Reduced cost.
Outcome
Rex Gorrell BMW has supported the use of reclaimed product whilst reaping the benefit of its reduced cost and delicious blend of soft colour tones.
