The Wee Hur Student Village – Brick Inlay in Precast Facade Panels at Gibbons Street, Redfern

The Wee Hur Student Village at 13–23 Gibbons Street, Redfern is a purpose-built student accommodation development comprising an 18-storey tower with shared facilities for residents.

The project was designed by AJC Architects, with Advanced Precast responsible for manufacturing the concrete preast and brickfaçade elements. The design required a façade system capable of integrating brick within precast panels while maintaining construction efficiency.

Brick Inlay and Precast Integration

Form Brick supplied brick inlay components for the brick inlay panels produced by Advanced Precast.

Over 280 precast panels were manufactured for the building. Many incorporated brick inlay sections, along with other grooves and banding details. Window frames were installed in the factory prior to delivery, allowing panels to arrive on site largely complete.

The brick inlay process positioned in the mould before casting, ensuring consistent alignment of the brickwork.

Technical Highlight – Protruding Brick Innovation

This project was our first of now several projects done with Protruding brick in a precast panel. Quite difficult to innovate but simplified in subsequent projects with some experience. The protruding bricks are interestingly placed on only a few areas of the buildings façade. ‘Less is more’ when making a bold brickwork feature, with the desired outcome truly achieved.

Outcome

The integration of brick inlay within precast panels allowed brickwork to be completed under factory conditions, improving consistency and reducing on-site bricklaying.

Through coordination between AJC Architects, Advanced Precast, and Form Brick, the façade system was delivered using prefabricated construction while maintaining the intended brick expression.
